PPD does not mean you are flawed or that you don't care about your baby. Your body and brain are just having a difficult time getting back to normal. The way everyone adjusts is different, but you are still a caring, wonderful mother.
Most new parents (experts estimate about 80%) experience mood swings and weepiness during the first 2-3 weeks after giving birth. Sometimes called “the baby blues”, this is a normal adjustment period that resolves without any medical assistance.
There is no one cause for perinatal mental health disorders. A combination of psychological, social, and biological stressors contribute to the symptoms of depression or anxiety in women who are planning to have children. Hormonal fluctuations can also cause reactions in some people. Risk factors do include a personal or family history of mood or anxiety disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder (manic-depressive), and sensitivity to hormonal changes. Developing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder is not your fault. You did not do anything to “get” this.
