Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can you have postpartum depression and still love your baby?

PPD does not mean you are flawed or that you don't care about your baby. Your body and brain are just having a difficult time getting back to normal. The way everyone adjusts is different, but you are still a caring, wonderful mother.

  • How is postpartum depression different than the "baby blues"?

Most new parents (experts estimate about 80%) experience mood swings and weepiness during the first 2-3 weeks after giving birth. Sometimes called “the baby blues”, this is a normal adjustment period that resolves without any medical assistance.

  • What causes perinatal mental health disorders? How did I get this?

There is no one cause for perinatal mental health disorders. A combination of psychological, social, and biological stressors contribute to the symptoms of depression or anxiety in women who are planning to have children. Hormonal fluctuations can also cause reactions in some people. Risk factors do include a personal or family history of mood or anxiety disorders such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder (manic-depressive), and sensitivity to hormonal changes. Developing a perinatal mood and anxiety disorder is not your fault. You did not do anything to “get” this.

  • How can I contact you?

You can contact us by calling 586-995-7335, sending an email to caribarbfreyseniorcare@gmail.com, or filling out the contact form on our website.
